New Orleans - French Quarter

Welcome to the Quarter!

New Orleans French Quarter Cathedral

The French Quarter, or Vieux Carre which mean "Old Square," is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans. It was established in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste, a French Colonizer who reported finding a crescent bend in the river that would protect the colony from tidal surges and hurricanes.

In 1788 the Great New Orleans Fire followed by another large fire in 1794 destroyed the majority of the colonial architecture leaving the now Spanish rule to rebuild. Thus, when visiting the French Quarter, you will be seeing mostly Spanish architecture.
